No More Human HRs: Coinbase and Zapier Deploy AI Avatars for Job Interviews

Candidates applying for white-collar positions are suddenly finding themselves face-to-face with automated avatars instead of human recruiters. Tech specialist Biju Thomas recently sat through a thirty-minute interview with Sophie, an AI avatar created by Experis, who smiled, gestured, and asked follow-up questions like a real human who actually cares about your hobbies.

This virtual interrogation style, once reserved for hourly retail jobs where corporate soul-crushing starts early, has rapidly climbed the corporate ladder to screen white-collar applicants. With AI-powered resume builders flooding recruiters with millions of applications, corporate HR departments are desperately outsourcing the first wave of human contact to algorithms to protect themselves from the automated spam they helped create.

The scale of this automated screening of candidates is massive. A poll by Greenhouse revealed that 63% of job seekers in the US and 57% in Germany have already faced a chatbot interviewer. Startups like CodeSignal and established players like HireVue are rushing to sell these virtual gatekeepers to companies who apparently find human conversation too expensive.

At Coinbase, which receives a staggering 1.5 million resumes annually, an AI bot named Milo now handles initial screenings, leading to over 240 hires. Meanwhile, Zapier used AI to filter five times more candidates than humanly possible, proving that robots are indeed much better at ignoring people at scale.

However, not everyone is thrilled about being evaluated by a glorified screensaver. Critics point out that these systems often judge candidates on arbitrary facial expressions and vocal pitches rather than actual skills, prompting 38% of applicants to walk away from the process entirely.
