Sam Altman Fears AI Monopoly: The Pot Calling the Kettle Black?

Original version ·

In a display of irony so thick you could cut it with a silicon wafer, OpenAI’s chief Sam Altman is now publicly sweating over the prospect of a few mega-corps controlling the future of AI. It’s almost touching to watch the industry’s top titan suddenly find religion regarding centralized power.

In a recent podcast appearance, Sam Altman warned that if power remains concentrated in a tiny cluster of tech giants, humanity will lose its agency in shaping the world. He argues that society and AI development must remain in lockstep to keep the machines from evolving beyond our reach. The OpenAI head seems particularly bothered by the idea that Anthropic—and its CEO Dario Amodei —might be using the "safety" argument as a convenient Trojan horse to consolidate control. Amodei previously penned a manifesto regarding the "real risks" of advanced AI, which conveniently frames his company as a necessary fortress against chaos. The friction is now open: Anthropic stands alone as the only major player refusing to back open-source AI models, effectively choosing the walled-garden path. Altman frames this as a dangerous sacrifice of freedom for the illusion of security, claiming that the fear of AI going rogue is exactly what will cause the very centralization he claims to despise.

It is truly a masterful performance to witness a billionaire building the world's most powerful black-box engine decry the dangers of people not having enough control. Perhaps the concern isn't really about who controls the future, but rather whose logo ends up on the server rack that eventually manages it.
