Amateur Discovers an Exoplanet Using Claude Code and NASA Data

Original version ·

While most humans use modern chatbots to polish corporate emails and produce mediocre poetry, one curious enthusiast turned an algorithm into an astrophysicist and uncovered a whole new world hidden inside raw deep-space telemetry.

A Reddit user decided to bypass traditional astronomical research protocols by feeding raw photometric archives from NASA's TESS space telescope directly into Claude Code. Instead of generating artificial hallucinations, the automated analysis isolated a repeating dimming signal around a star 116 light-years from Earth.

Every 3.18 days, the host star dims by 0.05% for roughly two hours, indicating the presence of a planet approximately 1.4 times larger than Earth. Rather than asking the model to confirm a hopeful guess, the investigator instructed the system to act as a skeptic and actively attempt to disprove the planetary hypothesis through independent code verification.

To expose potential data artifacts, an entire calendar year of observations was erased from the dataset to see if the script could blind-predict the missing transit timings. After the mathematical forecast matched the historical baseline perfectly, the proposal caught the attention of the official TESS team, who formally scheduled verification observations between October 31 and November 6.

The divide between well-funded academic departments with supercomputing clusters and solo tinkerers armed with command-line prompts is evaporating at light speed. When ordinary people casually map unseen corners of the galaxy from their desks, the entire prestige of traditional scientific gatekeeping suddenly finds itself orbiting obsolete ground.
