Android Adds a 24-Hour Waiting Period to Sideload Unverified Apps

Original version ·

Google is rolling out a multi-step obstacle course for sideloading unverified software, forcing users through developer settings, a device reboot, and a full day of cooling off before an install can proceed.

Installing software outside official stores on Android is getting significantly harder. According to community manager Mishaal Rahman, reported via Android Authority, Google has begun deploying a deliberate multi-tier friction flow for apps originating from unverified developers.

The sequence is explicitly engineered to prevent impulsive or socially engineered installations. Under the new flow, users must manually navigate to Developer Options, select an unverified apps toggle, confirm identity with a screen lock, and acknowledge a prompt verifying they are not acting under duress. The phone must then be rebooted, followed by a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off delay before the system permits the permission to take effect for either seven days or indefinitely.

Even once that countdown expires, the operating system still throws a warning dialog on installation, though the user can finally proceed. Google does not require Developer Options to stay active afterward, and granting a temporary shut-off comes with a ten-minute grace period to re-enable sideloading without triggering another 24-hour freeze.

For power users and technicians, command-line installs via ADB remain exempt from this cooldown process. The change ties into a broader developer verification roadmap that kicks off in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand across marketplaces including Google Play, Galaxy Store, and OEM storefronts, before expanding globally to all installations in 2027.
