Anthropic Predicts a 32% GDP Boom or Total Unemployment Nightmare
Anthropic just dropped a fancy PDF predicting how AI might either save the world or leave your desk empty by 2030. It is the kind of high-stakes corporate crystal-ball gazing that makes everyone feel simultaneously rich and terrified.
The research sketches out three futures where AI models decide the fate of the US economy. In the moderate scenario, we see a modest 1.6% GDP bump, while the significant scenario—deemed most likely—promises an 8.3% boost. The spicy extreme scenario, however, bets on a massive 32.4% GDP surge powered by recursively self-improving models.
This extreme growth comes with a hefty price tag: an 18% unemployment rate for knowledge workers who simply cannot keep up with the pace of automation. As 15% of the total GDP gets swallowed by AI corporations, the traditional paycheck for human intellect starts looking like a relic of the past.
Engineering, logistics, and design processes are expected to accelerate by orders of magnitude, effectively pouring fuel on the fire of the physical world. While efficiency reaches a fever pitch, the transition period for humans looks like a frantic, poorly planned fire drill.
