Anthropic Turned Its Chrome Extension Into an Autonomous Co-Worker Agent

The side panel in Google Chrome no longer exists in a vacuum. Anthropic synced its browser extension directly with the entire Claude ecosystem, sharing chat history, active connectors, and custom skills seamlessly across web, desktop, and mobile setups.

Instead of merely summarizing text, the agent now navigates active tabs, fills out forms, and scrapes data behind authenticated logins. This bypasses missing APIs on outdated supplier portals or clunky internal enterprise dashboards by simply letting the AI click around like an unpaid intern.

To keep rogue websites from hacking the bot via prompt injections, a background safety algorithm now intercepts planned actions and checks them against the original user prompt. High-stakes triggers like making payments or dumping sensitive data still demand a manual click, just in case the AI decides to buy five tons of gravel on company credit.

The feature is currently exclusive to the official desktop version of Chrome for Max and Team subscribers, with Pro tier access rolling out shortly. Direct local file system access remains blocked, keeping desktop tasks tethered to the standalone application.

Handing full browser control to an autonomous model is either the peak of digital productivity or an invitation for malicious websites to hijack user sessions in broad daylight.
