A Chinese development studio launched over 20 dating apps where roughly 75% of interactions were handled by Claude. The AI was strictly instructed to never admit it wasn't human and to ghost anyone asking for a video call or a real-time photo.

To make the scam believable, the studio employed a secondary workforce of freelancers who acted as the 'human' face when the AI hit a wall. These people were tasked with video verification and social media proof, while other models generated avatar photos and provided the freelancers with suggested responses. The system was so advanced that it even featured a secret 'reviewer' mode, which disabled the payment-redirecting browsers and illicit features whenever Apple or Google performed an app store audit.

The financial core of the project relied on selling internal credits, creating a scalable revenue stream that didn't require a massive staff. Anthropic eventually caught on, nuking the accounts and flagging the infrastructure—which included apps like DORA, DONI, ROMI, LUMA, JOVIA, KIRA, GRACECHAT, HAVEN, NALO, and LOVIA—to the platform holders.

This is the inevitable destiny of the 'lonely hearts' market in the age of generative models. We have officially reached the stage where it is cheaper to pay an AI to lie to someone for money than it is to actually pay a human to build a real relationship.
