Anthropic Begs Samsung for Custom 2nm Chips to Escape Nvidia Monopoly
The AI hardware gold rush is getting hilariously messy. Instead of just writing smart code, every chatbot maker now wants to be a silicon pioneer. Because why buy expensive chips when you can burn billions trying to build your own?
The creators of the Claude (chatbot) chatbot, Anthropic, have entered early-stage negotiations with Samsung Electronics to design and manufacture their own custom AI accelerator. The startup is trying to escape a logistical nightmare. Currently, Anthropic is forced to run its models across three different hardware environments: Amazon's Trainium, Google's TPU, and Nvidia's gold-plated GPUs. Maintaining three entirely different optimization stacks is the software equivalent of trying to drive a car with three different steering wheels.
The proposed solution involves using Samsung's cutting-edge 2-nanometer foundry process along with advanced chip-packaging technologies. If this deal goes through, Anthropic's custom silicon could become one of the very first AI accelerators built on such an ultra-thin node. This isn't just a sudden whim; the startup has been quietly eyeing its own hardware design since at least April, trying to shield itself from chronic global chip shortages.
Building custom silicon also solves a massive strategic conflict. Both Google and Amazon are Anthropic's cloud providers, but they also double as fierce competitors with their own AI systems like Gemini and Bedrock. Relying on your rivals for the very computing power needed to beat them is a bold strategy, to say the least. Controlling their own chip design allows Anthropic to optimize hardware specifically for Claude (chatbot)'s notoriously massive context windows.
Samsung is equally desperate for this partnership to succeed. The South Korean giant is actively trying to break TSMC's absolute monopoly on contract manufacturing for AI hardware. Securing Anthropic as a flagship client would instantly boost Samsung's reputation, especially since they already participated in Anthropic's mind-boggling $65 billion Series H funding round alongside SK Hynix and Micron.
This chip-making ambition places Anthropic in a very expensive club. Google has been building its own TPUs since 2015, Amazon has its own custom chips, and Microsoft is rolling out the Azure Maia. Even OpenAI is rumored to be working with Samsung on its own custom silicon project. While designing chips is a notoriously expensive sport, Anthropic's massive valuation of $965 billion after its latest funding round suggests they certainly have the cash to burn.
Designing microchips is a brutal, capital-intensive game that has historically crushed many ambitious software companies. Yet, in the current AI arms race, having your own custom silicon is the ultimate status symbol, regardless of whether it actually works or just ends up as an incredibly expensive paperweight.
