Apple Nearly Axed 5,000 AppleCare Humans for AI Bots
Oh joy, the corporate geniuses at Apple almost traded thousands of real human support agents for soulless algorithms. It seems the masters of innovation decided that hearing 'Have you tried turning it off and on again?' from a chatbot is peak user experience.
The plan to let go of roughly 5,000 AppleCare workers was reportedly shelved for the time being, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The company previously flirted with the idea that AI-powered phone and web agents could fully replicate the complex empathy required to deal with a frustrated customer who forgot their iCloud password for the fifth time.
While the mass firing is currently off the table, the shift is already well underway. Apple has started rerouting customers in the USA and Canada to a generative AI bot instead of the traditional automated menus. This digital assistant is currently tasked with walking users through basic troubleshooting steps, presumably with the same level of robotic patience that makes people want to throw their iPhone out the window.
If the AI fails to solve the crisis or if a customer manages to negotiate their way to a human, the bot can initiate a transfer. Meanwhile, the tech giant hasn't been entirely idle regarding its headcount; recent weeks saw the quiet trimming of middle management, including the departure of over 10 directors.
It is cute how companies pretend that replacing support staff with a fancy script is an 'upgrade' for the user rather than just a way to stop paying for health insurance and ergonomic chairs. Eventually, the only thing left in the support loop will be two bots talking to each other, and at that point, the silence will be the most helpful feature ever released.
