Apple Tax: Why Your Next MacBook Just Got Way More Expensive
Apple has officially decided that your wallet should subsidize the AI gold rush. With memory prices skyrocketing thanks to massive data center demand, the company is passing the cost straight to you, hiking prices across its entire hardware lineup.
The price tags on MacBook, iPad, and even the Vision Pro are climbing because AI developers are hoarding every stick of RAM and SSD on the planet. Apple has increased prices across the board, with the base MacBook Neo jumping from $600 to $700 and the MacBook Pro hitting a $2,000 baseline. Even accessories like the Apple TV and HomePod aren't safe from this silicon-hungry reality.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, admitted earlier this month that the company could no longer shield users from the brutal reality of the supply chain. Companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are struggling to keep up, but demand from the AI sector is effectively sucking the air out of the room for consumer electronics. Other hardware makers like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have already started adjusting their prices in response to this long-term memory drought.
Wall Street didn't love the news, as Apple shares dipped nearly 8% following the announcement. While tech giants pretend this is just a temporary supply hiccup, the market reality suggests that the silicon party is over for consumers. As long as the AI bubble continues to demand more compute power, the average user remains at the bottom of the priority list, eventually footing the bill for a trend they might not even be using.
