The contract tasks Blue Origin with designing, building, and eventually babysitting the Mars Telecommunications Network. By December 31, 2028, a high-performance orbital satellite needs to be ready to beam scientific data, high-res photos, and navigation pings across the void. This isn't just about sending selfies from rovers; it's the backbone for future human missions that will require more bandwidth than a standard dial-up modem.

The agency’s strategy hinges on offloading the grunt work of space infrastructure to the private sector. Instead of building their own routers, NASA wants the commercial industry to handle the heavy lifting, allowing them to focus on the "science" part of the budget.
