ByteDance's new Photoshop killer splits AI images into actual editable layers

Original version ·

Generating a nice picture is easy, but editing a tiny typo without ruining the entire background has been a nightmare. Now, the creators of TikTok claim they solved it by bringing classic graphic design layers to AI.

The landing page for Seedream 5.0 Pro has officially gone live, showcasing a flagship image generation model that aims to bridge the gap between prompt-to-image slot machines and professional design software. Originally teased at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference, this model introduces the ability to split any generated image into fully independent, editable layers just like a PSD file. Instead of regenerating the entire frame to fix a minor detail, users can isolate any object, text block, or background element with a simple selection or text prompt.

This layout can then be scaled, moved, or edited individually while the rest of the canvas remains completely untouched. ByteDance also introduced interactive sketching, where drawing a simple arrow or a crude scribble directly on the image guides the AI in making precise local adjustments. To prove the model's capabilities, the company demonstrated converting a rough, hand-drawn wireframe directly into a fully realized website UI mockup.

Furthermore, the system tackles the notorious AI-text problem by natively rendering typography in over ten languages, adjusting for complex script directions like right-to-left Arabic or vertical Japanese manga layouts. It also packs a high information density, generating structured charts, multi-level diagrams, and full presentation slides with legible text. However, despite these flashy demos, the parent company of TikTok has not yet provided any technical reports, benchmarks, or API pricing, leaving the design community to wonder if this is a revolutionary tool or just highly polished marketing vaporware.

The dream of firing the entire design department and replacing them with a single prompt engineer is getting suspiciously closer. Yet, until real-world testers can benchmark this against OpenAI or Google's models, it remains a beautiful promise trapped behind a closed corporate showcase.
