Caltech and Sophia Space Patent Orbital Solar Data Centers

AI workloads are heating up Earth so fast that tech visionaries decided the only logical step left is shipping server racks straight into zero gravity, relying on cosmic vacuum to keep the silicon from melting down completely.

The patent granted on July 14 outlines a modular computing architecture designed for assembly in low Earth orbit. Developed alongside JPL experts, the concept centers around passively cooled computing blocks named TILE (Thermal Integrated LEO Edge) connected directly to dedicated orbital storage units powered entirely by solar energy.

Former NASA veteran Leon Alkalai founded Sophia Space in 2023 under the umbrella of Mandala Space Ventures to commercialize off-world processing. The initiative evolved directly out of Caltech research into space-based solar power, co-authored by scientists like John R. Brophy and professor Sergio Pellegrino.

After locking down $22 million in funding, the team booked a ticket to orbit for 2027, where the TILE hardware will fly aboard the Apex Nova spacecraft for its first real-world operational test.

Server farms floating above the clouds may eliminate ground power bills, but fixing a blue screen of death with a spacewalk sounds like a nightmare for any IT helpdesk.
