OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Health Across US Despite Fresh Legal Scrutiny
OpenAI opened ChatGPT Health to all adult US users across free and paid tiers. The tool plugs into medical records and lab results, yet disclaims any diagnostic role.
Announced in July 2026, OpenAI has released ChatGPT Health to all registered users aged 18 and older in the United States. The feature is accessible across all subscription tiers—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro—both on the web and through iOS.
First introduced in January, the mode was previously sequestered in its own section. Now, health-related questions can be asked within any standard chat. The system is designed to ingest personal medical data, integrating with Apple Health, electronic health records, and lifestyle platforms like Function and MyFitnessPal. Once synced, it interprets laboratory test results and generates wellness recommendations.
According to OpenAI, weekly users asking the chatbot health-related questions jumped from 230 million to over 300 million. While the company claims its models have progressed in parsing medical queries, the legal firewall remains firmly in place: its terms of service explicitly state the system is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical conditions and cannot replace professional medical judgment.
The nationwide expansion came immediately after a lawsuit was filed against the company in Florida. In that complaint, a pastor alleged that ChatGPT advised him against seeking professional care, a decision that he claims nearly cost him his life. The company has not altered its standard liability disclaimers in response.
