OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work with GPT-5.6 to Automate Office Grunt Work

Original version ·

The corporate ladder just got an automated escalator. OpenAI is rolling out a massive redesign aimed at replacing endless copy-pasting with autonomous agents that actually "work" while executives brainstorm new ways to cut the headcount.

OpenAI quietly killed its standalone Codex app and integrated it into a unified desktop experience. The new ChatGPT app now splits into three distinct operational modes: Chat, Work, and Codex, essentially turning the chatbot into an executive assistant with full access to local files and system controls.

The core of this coup is the new Work mode, which hooks directly into corporate lifelines like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Drive. By typing a simple "@" command, users can summon specific apps, instructing the AI to hunt down files, draft spreadsheets, or generate entire interactive web applications without ever opening a browser. It is basically a very polite, non-unionized intern that never sleeps.

For those who find even typing a prompt too exhausting, the Scheduled Tasks feature automates repetitive workflows on a set schedule. The agent can monitor Slack channels for updates, compile meeting agendas, and edit documents while its human supervisor is busy doing literally anything else. To make things even more invasive, the desktop app features "Computer Use," allowing the AI to click buttons and navigate websites on behalf of the user.

Meanwhile, the experimental Atlas browser has been officially sent to the tech graveyard. OpenAI is pivoting instead to a Chrome extension that embeds ChatGPT directly into the browser sidebar, proving once again that building a new web browser is a headache even artificial intelligence wants to avoid.

The rollout is already active for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu tiers, with Plus and Business users getting access shortly. Desktop users on the free tier also get a taste of the action, receiving the new GPT-5.6 Terra model to run their automated chores.

Corporate middle managers are about to find out just how replaceable their daily email-forwarding routine actually is. As office work morphs into supervising an army of autonomous bots, the boundary between a productive employee and a glorified AI babysitter is officially gone.
