Rent your face to Chinese AI micro-dramas for as little as $15
Booming AI micro-dramas in China are turning ordinary faces into cheap digital assets, but unlicensed clones are already flooding video feeds.
Between January and March 2026, roughly 128,000 micro-dramas launched in China, with 95% of them relying on neural networks, according to a report by Rest of World cited by habr. The multi-billion-dollar format has spawned a commercial marketplace where ordinary people license their likenesses for video games, online ads, and synthetic video serials.
Brokers and platforms pay anywhere from $15 to $700 to license a likeness, letting producers browse catalogs filterable by age and gender. On marketplace platform ActID, about 300 out of 800 registered users—ranging from extras to influencers and non-actors—have agreed to license their faces for generative video. Likenesses on the service sell for between $15 and $74, with the platform taking a 10% commission.
Hiring an algorithm to wear someone else's face is vastly cheaper than paying an actor for live-action shoots, drawing budget-conscious advertisers and luxury brands alike. But the rush to populate thousands of algorithmic soap operas has outpaced legal consent.
Unlicensed harvesting is already rampant. ByteDance's micro-drama platform Hongguo pulled a series with over 40 million views after two vloggers discovered their stolen likenesses had been modified and used without permission. Meanwhile, ByteDance's short-video app Douyin has removed over 85,000 AI videos for unauthorized likeness or voice use since the start of the year.
Chinese courts have begun siding with victims, ruling that deploying an AI-generated likeness without consent remains illegal even when the face has been digitally altered.
