Cursor launched Cursor Router inside its Auto mode for Teams and Enterprise plans to stop engineers from burning corporate money on basic syntax tweaks. Around 60% of software developers select a single top-tier model and use it for every single prompt, effectively paying flagship rates to move a UI button two pixels to the left.
The new Router system classifies each incoming request before hitting any AI endpoint. It inspects context, complexity, and target domain, offloading routine edits to budget models while reserving heavy reasoning engines for complex multi-step logic. Users get three pre-set operating modes: Intelligence, Balance, and Cost.
Engineers trained the algorithm on over 600,000 real developer prompts and validated performance through live A/B tests across millions of calls. According to internal data, the Auto Balance mode surpassed Opus 4.8 in user satisfaction while cutting token expenses by 36%, while early enterprise clients reduced overall prompt spending by up to 50%.
