While Amazon and Google dream of infinite AI, our actual power lines are screaming for mercy. It turns out that when a few hundred data centers decide to unplug at once, the lights might go out for the rest of us. Who could have seen this coming?
When Big Tech builds massive server farms for AI, they design them to be fragile princesses. In a recent incident near Washington, 60 data centers suddenly disconnected from the main grid and switched to their own generators, triggered by a safety mechanism meant to protect their precious chips from voltage jitters. This triggered a massive surge in power demand, forcing grid operators like PJM and Dominion Energy to slash power generation elsewhere to prevent a total cascade of blackouts across the region.
John Moura from NERC pointed out that the grid simply isn't built to survive a sudden 1,500-megawatt void left by fleeing data centers. Because these facilities now consume triple the energy they did a decade ago—with projections to triple again by 2028—the math is getting scary. In Texas, ERCOT has logged over 30 near-misses since 2020, including a 2022 incident where a transformer failure forced 400 crypto miners and data centers to go dark, creating a 1,700-megawatt imbalance.
Despite the danger, a trade group representing Amazon and Google fought off proposed rules that would force data centers to 'ride through' minor voltage drops. They cite the potential cost of damaged hardware as a reason to keep their twitchy safety switches. Schneider Electric’s Jim Simonelli suggests the industry lacks a basic sense of environmental responsibility toward the grid, but for now, they are content to keep their servers safe while the rest of the neighborhood plays electrical roulette.
It is peak capitalism to prioritize a few thousand dollars worth of server components over the stability of a regional power grid. The irony of building artificial intelligence that threatens to return civilization to the dark ages is almost too elegant to be accidental.
