Deep Drops a 10-Meter Underwater Living Capsule Off Florida

Ocean technology startup Deep, founded in 2021, has anchored its pilot underwater habitat called Vanguard at a depth of 17 meters near Tennessee Reef in Florida. Unlike typical submersible modules that get pulled back to the surface after every mission, this 10-by-2.5-meter underwater tube is permanently bolted to the seafloor to support long-term living.

Inside, the submerged steel capsule squeezes in four sleeping bunks, a sofa, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a full science laboratory. Access to the ocean is managed through a built-in moon pool and diving chamber, while a semi-autonomous support buoy floating on the surface handles oxygen supplies, electrical power, and internet access, making it basically an underwater studio apartment with higher pressure.

The design draws inspiration from the 1986 Aquarius Reef Base, currently operated by Florida International University. Under research director Dawn Kernagis, Deep is offering research teams of up to two people $50,000 grants alongside a five-day ocean-floor residency, provided they survive a mandatory two-week training program and prove why living underwater yields better science than commuting from above.

Living in a pressurized metal cylinder under 17 meters of sea water might sound like a claustrophobe's nightmare, but for marine researchers, it represents the ultimate escape from land-based distractions. Time will tell whether permanent ocean dwelling becomes the next scientific revolution or just an extremely expensive underwater hermit experiment.
