Every fifth JetBrains developer now writes zero manual code as AI agents completely take over the keyboard

Original version ·

Software development has officially devolved into managing digital interns who never sleep, drink coffee, or ask for a salary bump, as silicon assistants take over the heavy lifting.

A global survey of over 15,000 professional developers reveals that manual typing is rapidly becoming a quaint hobby. 90% of respondents use coding agents at work at least once a week, while 68% fire them up on a daily basis. The transition from writers of syntax to high-paid supervisors of silicon workers happened quietly, almost as if nobody wanted to admit they were just playing chess while the machine built the app.

The most shocking plot twist is that experienced engineers are leaning into this laziness way faster than newcomers. Roughly every fourth senior developer admits that agents generate more than 80% of their actual code, proving that wisdom really does come with the ability to delegate the boring parts to an algorithm.

Users of Codex take this philosophy to a whole new level of detachment. Among Codex users, 42% let agents write the lion's share of their code, and 37% write literally zero code without algorithmic assistance. Meanwhile, Claude Code has quietly captured 39% of the workplace, proving that people will happily hand over the keyboard to anything that speaks fluent Python and doesn't judge their variable naming conventions.

The modern software engineer has successfully automated themselves into a glorified project manager for a very fast, very obedient calculator. Progress marches on, leaving humans to ponder whether typing semicolons was ever truly a productive use of human consciousness.
