Fingrid to Snip Fiber Lines and Chop Down Russian Power Poles by 2027
When electricity exports dry up, keeping up physical poles just for a neighbor's internet cable makes zero financial sense. Finnish power giant Fingrid gave Russian telcos a hard deadline before pulling the literal plug on cross-border fiber routes.
The decision stems from a complete halt in electricity trading between the two nations since 2022. Finnish grid operator Fingrid officially warned Russian telecom companies that maintenance on power line supports carrying cross-border fiber-optic cables will permanently cease in 2027, after which the physical towers are slated for complete dismantling.
State grid operator Rosseti already shifted its own 400 kV high-voltage line segment between Vyborg and Yullikkala into limited domestic mode. Back in 2021, Russia shipped over nine terawatt-hours of power across five border grid lines, but with zero watts flowing today, maintaining massive steel structures purely to host third-party glass threads became a charity project no board room could justify.
This infrastructure cleanup directly hits Russia's international traffic routing, where Finland currently handles roughly 60 to 70 percent of all European transit. Overhead cables on power poles account for up to 30 percent of those direct Finnish communication links, with the rest relying on underwater Baltic routes and railway corridors.
Russian telecom providers are scrambling to negotiate alternative terrestrial transit routes through Belarus, the Baltic region, and Asian backbones. However, technical experts from analytics firm Vigo point out that removing these high-capacity lines drastically reduces network redundancy and threatens to spike latency for users in Western Russia, especially as domestic backbones approach full capacity.
Cutting physical wires in an increasingly isolated digital landscape marks a poetic chapter in modern infrastructure decoupling. Networks can reroute data through longer, laggy paths, but replacing lost physical redundancy without western equipment remains an entirely different hardware nightmare.
