Google AI Overviews Hit 43% of Searches as Zero-Click Sessions Surge
A report from Similarweb suggests Google is answering more queries directly on the results page. While publishers lose clicks, measurement across analytics platforms varies wildly.
The traditional list of ten blue links continues to shrink. According to Similarweb's Generative AI Landscape Report, Google now displays its AI Overviews summaries across 43% of search queries, up from roughly 15% eighteen months earlier.
The shift coincides with changing user behavior. Rather than punching in brief keywords, searchers increasingly enter complex, conversational prompts. By generating consolidated answers directly at the top of the screen, the search engine removes the incentive to leave the page. Analytics tracked by SparkToro indicate zero-click searches have now passed the 60% threshold.
For content publishers and e-commerce stores, the visibility penalty is severe. Analyses from Search Engine Journal and Ahrefs show that the top organic result loses between 33% and 58% of its typical click-through rate when an AI summary sits above it. To adapt, search optimization is migrating toward generative engine optimization (GEO), where publishers compete simply to be cited as an internal reference inside the generated block.
However, researchers disagree on just how pervasive these summaries actually are. While Similarweb reports 43%, platform Adthena measured AI Overviews at only 18%, and an academic review of 55,000 queries pegged the frequency at 13.7%. Digital Applied noted that while conversational questions trigger summaries in up to 60% of cases, commercial and transactional intent triggers them far less often.
Alphabet insists the feature drives quality engagement, claiming AI Overviews send billions of higher-converting visits to referenced websites every week. The shift has also proven lucrative internally: revenue for Google Search & Other climbed 17% year-over-year in Q2, aided by ad placements embedded directly alongside the generated text.
