DeepMind Boss Demis Hassabis Exits as Google Chases Gemini Cash

Original version ·

When the corporate machine demands fast quarterly revenue, actual science gets thrown out the window. Google is stripping away academic prestige to enter full panic mode against rivals.

Demis Hassabis stepped down from leading Google DeepMind, handing the steering wheel to his longtime deputy, Koray Kavukcuoglu.

Executive frustration had been simmering for quarters: boardroom leadership increasingly viewed Hassabis as an academic purist who dragged his feet on aggressive commercialization, preferring Nobel-worthy scientific research over weaponizing algorithms for immediate market dominance.

Back in 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai strategically elevated Kavukcuoglu to chief AI architect to take charge of Gemini, enjoying explicit backing from co-founder Sergey Brin.

Brin ordered the entire AI workforce to ditch pet research and focus exclusively on Gemini after competitor models from OpenAI and Anthropic recaptured the performance crown.

The next flagship release of Gemini is currently running two months behind schedule, plagued by internal benchmarks showing weak code-generation abilities compared to rivals.

The rush to ship comes despite Gemini reaching 1 billion monthly active users faster than any other platform in the history of Google.

The dreamy era of pure scientific curiosity inside Big Tech is officially over, replaced by an industrial race for chatbot market share. It turns out even world-class scientific prestige cannot protect a visionary when nervous shareholders demand a faster automated coding tool.
