Google Kills Google Assistant on Android for Gemini AI
Google is pulling the plug on its veteran assistant to force everyone onto its shiny new chatbot, because setting basic timers apparently requires a massive language model now.
The tech giant confirmed that on September 4, 2026, Google Assistant will officially shut down across mobile devices, starting a rollout phase expected to take several weeks. Once the cutoff lands, switching back to the legacy helper from smartphones or tablets will be completely impossible.
The shutdown stretches beyond smartphones to include smartwatches running Wear OS, connected headphones, and Android Auto systems. However, cars with built-in Google Assistant software get a temporary pass and will continue operating after the deadline.
