iFixit Teardown Shows Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Hinge Still Fails Dust Tests

Original version ·

Despite a redesigned hinge and an IP48 rating, fine dust still locks up Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, which scored a low 4/10 for repairability at iFixit.

A teardown of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 by repair outlet iFixit showed that the foldable device still struggles with fine grit. While Samsung advertises an IP48 rating, the "4" only certifies resistance against objects 1 millimeter or larger, leaving the device unprotected against everyday particles like sand (around 0.16 mm) and fine dust.

When iFixit introduced small dust particles into the hinge mechanism, the phone produced grinding noises and failed to open fully. Although Samsung introduced a revised hinge assembly and a titanium-reinforced inner screen structure, the design could not prevent particulate debris from obstructing mechanical movement.

The teardown also yielded a repairability score of 4 out of 10. Technicians found that the inner screen bezel broke during disassembly, and reaching the hinge requires completely peeling off the foldable panel. Swapping the batteries similarly requires removing the exterior cover display, creating significant risk of damage during routine maintenance.

Meanwhile, the crease remains a persistent mechanical reality: early testing cited by Tom's Guide noted that the center groove became noticeably more prominent after just seven days of use. While upcoming competitors like Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold claim full IP68 dust-proofing with gearless hinges, Samsung's eighth-generation folding design still treats sub-millimeter particles as an unresolved hazard.
