Japan is sending a probe to grab Phobos rocks—literally moon-napping
While everyone obsesses over Elon Musk and his Martian daydreams, JAXA is quietly planning a high-stakes heist on a tiny potato-shaped moon. It is refreshingly ambitious, mostly because it relies on robots making their own choices instead of waiting for a ping.
The Martian Moons eXploration mission is set to launch in October 2026, aiming to land on Phobos and bring at least 10 grams of cosmic history back to Earth. This isn't a simple touch-and-go maneuver; Mitsubishi Electric built the 4,480kg probe, which is mostly a massive fuel tank with a brain of its own. Because signal delays to Mars take up to 20 minutes, the probe must perform its own navigation, mapping craters in real-time to decide if a landing zone is safe or if it should abort the attempt entirely.
Before the big probe touches down in 2029, it will deploy a rover built by CNES and DLR to scout the terrain for 100 days. Once the coast is clear, the MMX will extend its robotic arm to drill into the surface, while a NASA-provided instrument sniffs for nitrogen-rich dust. The goal is to settle the debate on whether Phobos and Deimos are just captured asteroids or chunks of Mars kicked into orbit by a massive ancient collision.
Spending $345 million to hunt for space debris might seem like an expensive way to settle a planetary argument, but this is really about testing the AI autonomy required for future human travel. If a multi-ton robot can't land on a small rock without blowing itself up, the odds of a human landing on Mars look slim at best.
