JetBrains is evolving its Air project from a mere plugin into a full-blown AI-agent ecosystem. It’s a brave new world where your code might finally write itself—or at least charge you a fortune in tokens while you watch.
Originally launched as a niche experiment in 2025, Air has shed its skin to become the central nervous system for JetBrains’ entire software stack. The company is betting big that developers are tired of manual labor, shifting the focus from simple autocompletion to autonomous agent coordination across the board.
The ecosystem now splits into three distinct pillars. Air within standard JetBrains IDEs acts as the command center, allowing users to spin up multiple parallel agents like Claude, Codex, Gemini, Junie, or GitHub Copilot without breaking a sweat. It manages the session madness, ensuring your various AI helpers don't trip over each other while editing the same file.
For the corporate crowd, Air Teams provides a shared cloud playground for collaborative agent work, handling everything from tedious code reviews to mind-numbing release notes. Meanwhile, Air Governance acts as the necessary bureaucratic filter, letting IT managers set token limits and control who gets to poke which AI model, effectively turning the wild west of LLMs into a controlled corporate utility.
To stop the chaos of incompatible standards, JetBrains is pushing the Agent Client Protocol (ACP), which forces different agents to speak the same language.
