Microsoft orders sales teams to trash-talk OpenAI and Anthropic
After dumping billions into OpenAI, Microsoft is now teaching its salespeople how to roast its own AI partners in pitch meetings. Talk about top-tier corporate gratitude.
During an internal strategy session ahead of the new fiscal year, executives handed sales reps a fresh playbook aimed directly at competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Executive Vice President Jay Parikh instructed staff to pitch their offerings as a fully integrated ecosystem, dismissing rivals as mere sellers of disconnected parts.
Copilot chief Jacob Andreou took direct shots at Anthropic's Claude during a presentation on office software. He claimed that running Claude inside office apps resulted in lower speed, worse accuracy, and missing enterprise security integrations. Nothing says solid partnership like pointing out how slow your friend's chatbot runs in Excel.
This aggressive pivot marks a dramatic shift for Microsoft, which previously relied heavily on these exact partner models to power its flagship tools. The tech giant has already begun swapping out external models in Word and Excel for in-house alternatives to slash operating expenses.
Under AI chief Mustafa Suleyman, the company aims to roll out proprietary models across text, image, and voice by 2027. His team has already launched MAI-Transcribe-1, MAI-Voice-1, and MAI-Image-2 across Microsoft Foundry and the new MAI Playground.
Watching tech giants fund startups only to steal their homework and badmouth their performance is the ultimate enterprise soap opera. The line between strategic partnership and hostile takeover has never been quite so blurry.
