Midjourney buys astrology app Co-Star to build consumer software
AI image generator Midjourney has acquired astrology platform Co-Star, bringing on its 20-person mobile engineering team as it works to move beyond its Discord roots.
Image generation lab Midjourney has acquired astrology app maker Co-Star, according to a report by Bloomberg. The deal brings Co-Star's entire team of roughly 20 people into Midjourney, while the financial terms remain undisclosed.
Co-Star operates a popular social horoscope service with 4.3 million monthly active users, generating natal charts and compatibility reports using a combination of algorithmic tools and staff writers. Neither company has commented on whether any astrological features will actually make their way into image prompting.
The acquisition appears to be an acqui-hire aimed at solving a practical distribution headache. Since its debut, Midjourney has largely lived inside chat platform Discord, an interface that alienates casual smartphone users. As Bloomberg notes, Co-Star's mobile development experience could help Midjourney build and launch dedicated consumer applications for generating images and video—software that is reportedly already in active development.
