Modder Squeezes a Whole Steam Deck into a Game Boy Shell
When a portable PC feels more like carrying a brick, DIY hardware hackers take extreme measures with 3D printers and zero regard for thermal safety.
Hardware modder PhyFawkes managed to stuff the entire hardware stack of an LCD Steam Deck into a vertical body matching the exact dimensions of an original Nintendo Game Boy, naming the franken-device SteamBoy. The author pulled off the build using the stock Valve motherboard, factory battery, and internal speakers without engineering custom printed circuit boards.
The 3D-printed front panel houses a standard D-pad, an analog stick, a single mini-trackpad, and standard action buttons. Because the original thermal solution stood zero chance of fitting into a nineties chassis, the cooling setup was swapped for a miniature 30 × 7 mm fan hooked up to a custom heatsink mount.
To prevent the handheld from immediately melting into a puddle of resin, both the CPU and GPU were undervolted by 50 mV. Under this setup, lighter games like Tunic push internal temps between 70 °C and 79 °C, while demanding titles like Clair Obscur easily spike beyond 80 °C.
The console currently outputs video solely to an external monitor while work continues on integrating a 1200 × 1080 AMOLED panel with a 90 Hz refresh rate designed for VR headsets, which demands a custom ribbon bridge and modified BIOS firmware.
Cramming full-blown modern PC hardware into a nostalgic nineties brick proves that while ergonomic science has come a long way, the urge to risk second-degree palm burns for the sake of pure retro aesthetics remains undefeated.
