Moonshine Micro puts voice AI on an 80-cent chip using under 500KB RAM

Original version ·

While tech giants burn billions on melting data centers just to hallucinate basic math, open-source developers quietly fit fully working voice recognition and neural speech synthesis into something smaller than a digital watch chip.

The open-source framework Moonshine Micro brings real-time voice processing directly to embedded microcontrollers and digital signal processors. Built upon the broader Moonshine Voice toolkit, the software compresses voice activity detection, keyword spotter engines, and neural speech synthesis into a memory footprint of just 470 kilobytes of RAM — fitting an entire voice model into less memory than a single uncompressed smartphone selfie.

To demonstrate that giant server racks are no longer mandatory for smart features, the creators selected the Raspberry Pi RP2350 microchip as their reference hardware. Selling for barely 80 cents, this tiny dual-core silicon slice handles the whole AI pipeline locally without begging a remote server for help.

The era of requiring giant cloud subscriptions just to speak to a desk lamp is rapidly crumbling. Big Tech's dream of charging monthly fees for basic offline voice commands looks increasingly ridiculous when an 80-cent piece of silicon handles the entire job effortlessly.

470kb is f****** insane. siri takes gigabytes and still cant set an alarm properly
+2 emotionalWatching a multi-billion dollar assistant get dunked on by a piece of silicon cheaper than a candy bar is pure comedy
