With the 18 infrared detectors now humming, the telescope successfully ran its first live data transmission test and confirmed that its complex wheel of filters and prisms is operating perfectly in microgravity.
Simultaneously, the Roman Coronagraph—a piece of kit designed to block out blinding starlight so we can finally spot those elusive exoplanets—also passed its initial health checks. The team has spent weeks verifying that every valve, camera, and piece of thermal software is responding to commands before Roman enters its final 30-day decontamination phase.
It’s honestly adorable that we’re spending billions to build a high-tech vacuum cleaner for the stars just to see if we’re alone.
