NASA is launching a celestial tow-truck to save the Swift telescope
After two decades of watching the universe explode, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is running out of gas and altitude. NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies are playing space mechanic with a literal robotic tug to stop it from burning up.
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has spent twenty years chasing gamma-ray bursts, but it is now falling victim to Earth's atmosphere. Increased solar activity has expanded the upper layers of the atmosphere, dragging the telescope down faster than its handlers anticipated. To prevent a fiery reentry, NASA contracted Katalyst Space Technologies to build LINK, a compact robotic tug designed to latch onto the satellite and push it back to safety.
The entire mission moved from contract to launch in less than a year, a speed usually reserved for interns trying to finish a project before a deadline. The LINK apparatus underwent rigorous vacuum chamber testing, ensuring its ion engines and robotic arms won't pull a classic corporate Microsoft-style freeze during the critical docking maneuver.
The delivery system is just as dramatic: Northrop Grumman will use its Pegasus XL rocket, dropped mid-air from a modified Lockheed L-1011 aircraft named Stargazer. Once the rocket reaches orbit, LINK will attempt to grab the aging telescope. This $30 million operation is essentially the most expensive roadside assistance call in history, proving that space debris is becoming a major management headache.
If NASA succeeds, it sets a precedent for fixing broken tech in orbit instead of just letting it turn into expensive space junk. Whether this leads to a sustainable orbital economy or just creates more complex things that can break remains to be seen.
