Nintendo nukes 401 Switch emulator repos on GitHub in a single day
Nintendo's legal squad went on another scorched-earth rampage, forcing GitHub to obliterate hundreds of emulator forks in seconds.
Japanese gaming titan Nintendo launched seven targeted DMCA strikes directly at GitHub, forcing the code-hosting platform to nuke 401 repositories associated with Nintendo Switch emulation in a single sweeping purge.
The primary target of the sweep was the open-source project Suyu, which alone dragged down an entire network of 311 connected forks. Independent projects like Skyline and remnants of the previously slaughtered Yuzu ecosystem were also wiped out in the crossfire.
According to Nintendo's legal filings, these repositories are guilty of distributing tools specifically crafted to bypass proprietary cryptographic TPM protections. The company argues that because Switch titles rely on encrypted prod.keys, any software designed to run decrypted retail game copies without official hardware permission qualifies as illegal copyright circumvention trafficking under the DMCA.
This massive takedown follows an aggressive campaign started in early 2024, during which Nintendo successfully forced the removal of over 8,500 Yuzu forks, cracked down on signature-patching utilities like SigPatch, and secured European court injunctions forcing file hosts to delete unauthorized game ROMs under threat of heavy financial penalties.
The relentless game of legal whack-a-mole proves that corporate copyright enforcement will happily scrub thousands of open-source lines of code off the internet just to protect hardware that is already approaching a decade in age.
