Nvidia Is Launching its GPUs to the Moon on a Lunar Outpost Rover

Original version ·

Silicon Valley AI fever has officially escaped Earth's atmosphere. Space startup Lunar Outpost is shipping Nvidia hardware straight to the lunar surface, proving that even moon dust can't escape the relentless reach of modern chipmakers.

Space startup Lunar Outpost announced that its next moon rover will be powered by an Nvidia Jetson chip to run its onboard lidar system. CEO Justin Cyrus confirmed the company is pushing higher-performance graphics processors into extreme off-world environments, making this payload likely the very first GPU to operate directly on the lunar surface.

The mission fits into NASA’s broader push to hire private tech firms to scout the terrain and hunt for critical resources like water ice ahead of planned astronaut landings in 2028. This isn't Nvidia’s only off-world venture either, as the chipmaker recently teamed up with Firefly Aerospace to host a Jetson platform on a lunar-orbiting satellite that processes images and tracks surface rovers.

The new rover will ride down aboard a lander built by Intuitive Machines to navigate tight craters and high-risk zones that orbital sensors simply miss. Scheduled to launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket before the end of the year, the mission targets Reiner Gamma, a lunar site known for its weird magnetic anomaly.

To prepare for a permanent lunar presence, NASA awarded hundreds of millions in contracts to commercial outfits, including Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin for heavy landers alongside rovers from Astrolab and Lunar Outpost. All this hardware is slated to touch down near the lunar south pole prior to the Artemis astronauts arriving in 2028.

Humanity is spending hundreds of millions of dollars sending high-end silicon to a desolate, airless rock while ground-based developers still fight over scarce server capacity. It turns out that building an off-world tech infrastructure is easier than fixing supply chains back home.

can it run crysis at -170 celsius though?

pure waste of money. fix the shortages on earth before putting ray tracing on dusty rocks.
