Nvidia Just Bet $105B on an OpenAI Data Center: The Ultimate AI Arms Race

Original version ·

Nvidia is throwing a casual $105 billion at a new OpenAI data center in Ohio. It’s a masterclass in 'if you want your chips to sell, build the house they live in,' proving that the AI hype train has officially run out of track and is now just building its own tracks.

Nvidia has decided that simply selling the shovels for the gold rush isn't enough; now they want to own the mine and the supply route. The company is providing a $105 billion guarantee to ensure OpenAI can lock down a massive data center campus being built by SB Energy in Ohio. On top of that, Nvidia is tossing another $1.5 billion directly into SB Energy to keep the gears turning.

This move is all about securing a massive, long-term playground for Nvidia hardware. CEO Jensen Huang is aiming for a future where these 8-gigawatt capacity facilities become the standard for massive AI manufacturing. The project is expected to launch its first 800 megawatts by 2028, with OpenAI locked into a 20-year lease.

The scale of this infrastructure is enough to make a utility company blush. Softbank and its subsidiary are planning to pump $4.2 billion into updating the local power grid with AEP Ohio to support the massive energy appetite. By 2030, Nvidia projects a staggering $600 billion in potential revenue from these AI power plants, essentially turning the company into a de facto global energy conglomerate.

It is truly heartwarming to see a hardware manufacturer pivot into a state-sized energy provider just to ensure their chips don't have to sit idle. Whether this leads to a new era of intelligence or just a really expensive way to generate heat, the sheer audacity of leveraging an entire state's power grid to keep a chatbot running is a bold testament to the current state of the tech economy.
