Nvidia Starts Guaranteeing Bank Debt for Neocloud AI Buyers

Original version ·

Specialized cloud providers struggle to get traditional bank credit to buy expensive processors. Nvidia is stepping in as an insurer, promising to cover defaults in exchange for a revenue cut.

When artificial intelligence startup Fireworks AI sought hundreds of millions of dollars in computing capacity, it turned to specialized neocloud provider GMI Cloud. But GMI Cloud hit a wall: traditional banks refused to finance the purchase of hardware clusters because the startup client lacked an investment-grade credit rating.

To break the deadlock, Nvidia agreed to act as an insurer on loans taken out by cloud hosts, stepped in to guarantee payments if a client defaults, and took a share of the cloud provider's revenue in exchange, according to details disclosed by GMI Cloud founder Alex Ye male to Business Insider.

The arrangement turns the chipmaker into a backstop for its own supply chain. GMI Cloud is committing $500 million toward infrastructure expansion under this financing structure. Other boutique hosting firms, including Firmus and Sharon AI, have also joined the program. For Nvidia, the setup diversifies distribution away from hyperscalers like Amazon and Microsoft, both of which are designing custom in-house accelerators.

The structure echoes concerns over circular financing, where a vendor finances transactions that inflate its own book of business. Industry observers note that the risk hinges entirely on real end-user demand: underwriting debt works smoothly as long as paying software developers keep funding clusters, but exposes the hardware vendor directly to credit defaults if startup cash burns out.
