OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads to 31 European countries
Free and Go tier users across Europe will soon see contextual promotions alongside chat sessions. OpenAI claims the pitches remain visually distinct from bot answers.
OpenAI is preparing to roll out advertising inside ChatGPT across 31 European nations, extending commercial inventory beyond its initial testing grounds in the United States and eight other markets. The European launch marks the largest geographic expansion of the ChatGPT Ads platform to date.
The ad slots will appear exclusively for users on Free and Go subscription tiers. Paid tiers, including Plus, Pro, and Enterprise, will remain ad-free. The company framed the monetization push as a necessary step to subsidize low-cost and free access to its conversational models.
Targeting hinges on conversational context rather than traditional search queries. If a user asks for software recommendations, compares vacation destinations, or evaluates consumer products, commercial placements can trigger alongside those inquiries. OpenAI maintains that promotional banners will be clearly marked, visually detached from the chatbot's generated text, and barred from altering model outputs. It also stated that raw chat logs will not be handed over to advertisers and that users can adjust ad personalization settings.
Behind the interface, the company is building an ad tech stack featuring conversion tracking, geolocation, custom audiences, and proprietary measurement hooks dubbed OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API. European advertisers will initially need to book inventory through OpenAI sales teams, agencies, and tech partners, with a self-serve Ads Manager planned for later availability.
