OpenAI dumps Cursor because Elon Musk bought the neighborhood

Original version ·

In the latest episode of Billionaire Playground drama, OpenAI is pulling the plug on Cursor after SpaceX acquired the AI editor. It seems sharing your best toys is hard when your co-founder is also your arch-nemesis.

Following the acquisition of Anysphere by SpaceX, OpenAI officially announced it is terminating its contract to provide language models to the Cursor code editor. The move effectively walls off Sam Altman’s tech from the ecosystem now controlled by his former partner, Elon Musk.

The existing agreement will remain active until November 12, 2026, giving developers a comfortable window to find a new engine for their code-writing sidekick. OpenAI cited concerns over the new ownership, noting that SpaceX and other Musk-led ventures have a history of playing fast and loose with service terms.

While OpenAI claims the decision was difficult due to its commitment to open accessibility, the company admitted it simply cannot risk its upcoming Astra model being used by an entity as unpredictable as SpaceX. The days of collaboration are officially over, as the focus shifts to ensuring that high-stakes intelligence doesn't end up in the wrong hands.
