OpenAI is making a $400 doughnut camera speaker with Jony Ive
Because what your living room really needed was a $400 motorized bagel watching every move you make and judging your grocery choices. OpenAI and Apple design legend Jony Ive are officially reinventing the smart speaker.
The hardware division at OpenAI has expanded into a dedicated team of over 200 specialists building an entire family of artificial intelligence devices. Their flagship debut is a motorized, doughnut-shaped speaker scheduled to land on store shelves by 2027 with a price tag between $300 and $400.
To keep the device from looking like another boring plastic cylinder, design studio LoveFrom, co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, took charge of the physical form. The device features physical moving parts and dynamic light indicators that twitch and glow to mimic a living, breathing companion reacting to human speech.
Underneath the futuristic shell, the gadget runs on an advanced iteration of the ChatGPT voice mode, tailored specifically for fluid, continuous daily conversations. Equipped with built-in cameras and spatial sensors, the speaker identifies user faces, scans items lying on a desk, manages smart home appliances, and automatically orders groceries when milk runs low.
Paying four hundred dollars for a glowing electronic pastry that films household activities represents either the peak of convenience or the most expensive surveillance device ever normalized. Tech enthusiasts will inevitably debate whether a twitching plastic ring is genuine innovation or just a glorified webcam with an attitude.
