Selection for the new ChatGPT for Academic Researchers initiative opens before the end of summer, targeting an initial cohort of 10,000 scientists, engineers, and mathematicians from preferred institutions. Participants will gain full access to the flagship GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model alongside dedicated technical support directly from OpenAI engineers.
Every selected academic receives four additional invite passes for university colleagues, effectively turning campus departments into unpaid beta-testing hubs. The expansion roadmap aims to scale the user base to 100,000 researchers while absorbing over $250 million in direct commitments through 2027.
While researchers already rely heavily on synthetic text generation for data processing and funding applications, this formal integration builds upon earlier academic push measures. Back in January, OpenAI launched Prism, a specialized document tool built into standard ChatGPT accounts to automate citation verification, academic paper formatting, and early lesson planning layouts.
