OpenAI reveals global ChatGPT usage patterns for Q2 2026
OpenAI published country-level data showing work tasks outweigh quick searches, while Latin America and Africa catch up in adoption speed.
OpenAI has released detailed country-level usage statistics for ChatGPT through its research platform Signals. The dataset covers the second quarter of 2026 and accounts for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro tiers, deliberately excluding corporate accounts.
According to the findings, work contexts see users asking the chatbot to perform tasks—such as writing, editing, data analysis, and code debugging—twice as often as they seek quick answers. Outside of work, the tool primarily serves as a search engine and quick-reference assistant. OpenAI interprets this split as a gradual shift from information retrieval to task delegation.
Visual generation via ChatGPT Images 2.0 has also gained traction, reaching 7.8% of total messages since its April 2026 release as users increasingly generate, edit, and analyze images from scratch. Meanwhile, the audience age demographic has shifted, with users over 35 showing a median increase of about five percentage points over the past year, led particularly by France and the Czech Republic.
Geographically, the adoption gap between nations narrowed in Q2 2026. Latin America, Africa, and Oceania registered the fastest growth, with Peru, Uruguay, and Costa Rica climbing highest in per-capita message rankings, while growth in North America and Europe proceeded at a slower pace.
