OpenAI is back at it, desperately trying to prove they can do more than just burn venture capital. They just launched GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, promising to cut costs in half while keeping the buzzwords factory running at full capacity.
OpenAI just expanded its GPT-6 lineup with two new siblings: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. While the flagship GPT-6 Astra continues to hog all the glory for complex reasoning, these two are built for the heavy lifting of scale and budget-conscious operations. The main draw here is a 50% price cut compared to the previous GPT-5.6 tiers, a move aimed at making sure developers don't jump ship to Anthropic the moment the bills come due.
GPT-6 Sol is positioned as the workhorse for coding, agents, and automation, while GPT-6 Luna is the bargain bin champion for high-volume, low-complexity queries. The company claims this price drop is achieved through optimization of inference and caching, essentially passing the server-side efficiencies down to the paying customer. It's a nice change of pace from the usual "pay us more for the same thing" software lifecycle.
The math is simple: at a scale of 100 million input tokens, GPT-6 Sol hits the wallet at roughly $400, while GPT-6 Luna drops to just $20. Whether these models actually hold their own against the latest Anthropic benchmarks remains an open question, but the race to the bottom of the pricing barrel is officially on. OpenAI is clearly banking on the idea that if the intelligence is "good enough" and cheap enough, nobody will notice if it's slightly less than god-like.
