OpenAI Is Killing Custom GPTs: Pack Your Bags and Say Goodbye
It is finally happening: OpenAI has decided that your precious Custom GPTs are just dead weight. After hyping them as the future of personal AI, the company is pivoting hard, leaving users to scramble through the wreckage of their own configurations.
OpenAI is pulling the plug on Custom GPTs, with the final curtain call set for December 11, 2026. The company is forcing a transition toward a new plugin architecture, claiming it offers a more cohesive way to bundle instructions, data, and service hooks. Users will soon see a 'Migrate to plugin' button in their dashboards, which attempts to map old instructions into 'skills' and knowledge files into 'reference files'.
However, this transition is far from a simple copy-paste. The migration ignores chat history, model preferences, and current publication status. Even the Custom Actions—the very things that let these tools talk to external APIs or CRM systems—won't port over automatically. Owners have to manually re-authorize every integration and re-publish their bots to the marketplace from scratch. While the old versions will limp along in a read-only state until the December deadline, users are essentially being asked to rebuild their digital houses while the foundation is being demolished.
This is the classic OpenAI bait-and-switch where the company treats user-generated content as a disposable prototype rather than a permanent asset. It seems the only thing more reliable than their release cycle is their ability to make customers do the heavy lifting for free.
