OpenAI Gives Devs a ModRetro Toy Because Why Fix Sora When You Can Play Games?
At OpenAI DevDay 2026, developers didn't get a functional model update, but they did get a retro-styled plastic paperweight. While the world waits for AGI, OpenAI is busy cosplaying as a 90s toy manufacturer with the ModRetro Chromatic.
During the event, OpenAI handed out 8,000 units of the ModRetro Chromatic, a transparent handheld that looks like it was stolen from a 1999 bedroom. This console ships with a custom OpenAI Codex plugin, allowing users to create games using prompt-based coding. Once the AI finishes hallucinating your code, you can burn the result onto physical cartridges.
Under the hood, the device relies on a FPGA-based chipset that faithfully recreates the original Nintendo hardware logic at the transistor level. It features a 2.56-inch IPS display and retains compatibility with vintage Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. The hardware also includes modern conveniences like USB-C charging and an infrared port for local multiplayer.
OpenAI flexed its creative muscle by releasing 13 pre-installed titles, including Pizza Dash and FlapGPT. The device is powered by three AA batteries, though an optional Power Core rechargeable battery is available for those who prefer not to visit the grocery store every six hours.
Giving professional developers a retro toy instead of breakthrough model architecture is a bold strategy. It effectively turns the obsession with AI-generated content into a tangible, plastic souvenir that costs more to produce than the server time for the code it runs. The industry has officially entered the era of expensive nostalgia-baiting as a substitute for real innovation.
