OpenAI Unleashes Dots: 24/7 Autonomous Agents Powered by GPT-6 Astra

Original version ·

Forget basic chatbots asking for prompts. OpenAI just turned the digital workforce on its head with persistent agents that run their own virtual PCs and do actual dev work while everyone sleeps.

Announced at DevDay, OpenAI rolled out Dots, an army of persistent autonomous agents powered by the next-gen GPT-6 Astra architecture. Unlike typical text bots that forget everything the second a tab closes, these entities come equipped with their own dedicated cloud computers, standalone sandboxed browsers, and direct plug-in connections to over 4,000 workplace applications.

Instead of locking users into a single dashboard, these agents seamlessly stalk workflows across ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, including direct voice chatter. Context remains synchronized everywhere, meaning a task tossed out in a hurried voice note while driving can be continued later in a team channel without the AI suffering digital amnesia.

In practical day-to-day operations, Dots autonomously comb through user feedback, pinpoint recurring bug reports, write the required code patches, run testing suites, and serve up complete pull requests ready for review. To prevent rogue software disasters, background data gathering is strictly restricted to read-only tools, leaving humans with full permission switches over what the agent can actually execute.

The rollout has already activated for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium tiers in supported territories, while Enterprise, educational, and healthcare organizations require administrative clearance to flip the switch.

Watching silicon interns independently diagnose software bugs, write code, and submit their own pull requests makes human junior developers look like an expensive hobby. When the digital workforce never sleeps, takes no lunch breaks, and lives rent-free across corporate chat apps, the definition of an indispensable employee just shrank to whoever holds the administrative kill-switch.
