How OrcDev Turned $400 in Subscriptions Into $157k of AI Compute

Original version ·

A developer claims two $200 flat-rate plans yielded 235 billion tokens in a month—compute that would cost over $157,000 on standard APIs.

According to developer-blogger OrcDev, aggressive flat-rate pricing from OpenAI and Anthropic allowed him to run an estimated $157,143.39 worth of compute for an actual outlay of $400 over a single month.

OrcDev reported processing 235 billion tokens by running two separate $200-a-month subscriptions: one for Codex and one for Claude. Instead of hitting walls, he noted that rate limits were rarely an obstacle, partly because both competing labs repeatedly reset usage ceilings while upgrading their platforms.

Standard developer APIs bill strictly by token volume, making massive automated workloads prohibitively expensive. Flat-rate developer subscriptions, however, create an arbitrage window. OrcDev argues that holding back on queries makes no economic sense on a fixed plan, urging users to run workloads continuously—including scheduled overnight agent tasks—while subsidized compute remains accessible.

Whether frontier AI labs will continue to tolerate heavy round-the-clock background workloads on flat-rate plans remains an open practical question.
