Perplexity Brings Its Desktop AI Agent to Windows to Tackle Local Files
After launching on macOS, the assistant from Perplexity now interacts directly with local files, Excel, and Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but only for top-tier subscribers.
Perplexity has begun expanding its Personal Computer desktop agent to Windows 10 and Windows 11, according to a report by habr. The tool previously ran exclusively on macOS, moving the company's autonomous desktop assistant onto mainstream enterprise workstations.
Unlike traditional browser-based chat assistants, the agent runs directly within the operating system and can read and modify local documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and folder directories. Perplexity pitches the software as a digital worker capable of pulling context across local drives, web queries, and cloud platforms simultaneously. For example, it can extract web data, open a local Excel file to update cells, and export the output to an office collaboration hub.
The desktop release follows a May 2026 integration connecting Personal Computer to Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, aiming to bridge the gap between cloud storage and offline files.
Granting an automated assistant system-level access introduces significant operational risk. Addressing safety concerns, Perplexity states that the agent must request user confirmation before performing sensitive actions, such as sending emails, altering system data, or deleting files. The company also claims client enterprise data is excluded from model training.
Access is currently limited to paid accounts on the Max and Enterprise Max subscription tiers, targeting corporate environments where Windows remains the primary operating system.
