Ring's New 'Throw Away the Key' Encryption is Peak Corporate Irony
Ring is rolling out a new encryption standard that promises security while keeping your data just accessible enough for their cloud. It is a masterclass in having your privacy cake and eating it too, assuming you trust the cloud with the keys in the first place.
The new TAKE (Throw Away the Key Encryption) standard will become the default setting for all Ring customers by the end of September. The system relies on a constantly rotating set of keys that reside in the cloud, giving Ring access only when specific user-activated features require processing. Once the task is complete, the company claims to purge these keys within 24 hours.
This implementation allows Ring to briefly decrypt and analyze footage to power features like Smart Alert, which identifies people, cars, or packages in your driveway. By basing the tech on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol from the Internet Engineering Task Force, Ring manages to keep its analytics engine running while maintaining a thin veil of privacy. While the option for true end-to-end encryption remains, it stays buried in the settings to avoid breaking these cloud-dependent features. Previously, Ring also introduced Ring Verify, which uses a digital watermarking system to prove that your clips haven't been tampered with or deepfaked.
Handing over the keys to your front door security—even just for 24-hour rentals—to a company with a history of police data-sharing requests is certainly a bold choice for the privacy-conscious. It seems that in the modern smart home, privacy is no longer an absolute state, but a flexible service subscription that can be toggled on or off depending on whether you want your camera to recognize a pizza delivery driver.
