Astronomers analyzed the rocky exoplanet LHS 1140 b, located 48 light-years from Earth, orbiting a small, cool red dwarf star. A research team led by Collin Cherubim from Harvard University confirmed a surrounding atmosphere, marking an unprecedented milestone for rocky worlds situated in habitable orbital zones.

Spectroscopic data revealed helium as the primary gas detected so far, which alone cannot sustain living organisms. However, this cosmic balloon mantle strongly suggests additional atmospheric layers remain hidden from current instruments, keeping hopes for complex chemistry alive.

Out of over 6,000 exoplanets discovered, past candidates like K2-18b lost momentum when biological signals proved false, while NASA's James Webb Space Telescope completely debunked Earth-like atmospheres across the famous TRAPPIST-1 rocky fleet.

Finding a gas envelope on a solid rock at just the right distance from its star means universe hunting no longer relies solely on dead space boulders and uninhabitable gas giants.
